Evolution Korea

In the past, the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process through which people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers most evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
