Evolution Korea

For a long time, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. Over time, this differential reproduction could lead to the development of completely new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, this genetic variability can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of any references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a fundamental part of biology that helps scientists learn how living organisms function and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and also to make important discoveries, such as developing new drugs.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains as much about the universe and life on our planet. It has been thoroughly scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religious beliefs as it only addresses physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestry with other animals.

It is essential for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, 에볼루션 슬롯 and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This belief is based on a variety of reasons. What is Creationism?

While some creationists are not Christian but many are. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

OECs may be less known, but their beliefs are just as passionate as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they evolved slowly afterward. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has won its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
