Evolution Korea

For a long time, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been battling to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. However, this is just one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or entire genomes. These changes can, over generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the growth in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They claim that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology that helps scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and develop. Evolution also shows how various species are linked. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries like new drugs.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so many aspects of the universe and life on earth and has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over the course of many years. The YECs are the best known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was literal and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs might not be as known however their beliefs are just as intense like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They assert that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they evolved gradually afterward. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainees in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
